Networking takes off at Newcastle Airport

New technology helps improve application performance

Newcastle International Airport (NIA) has deployed networking technology to tighten security and improve performance of critical applications.

NIA contracted supplier Enterasys to deploy a network that guarantees important systems, such as IP CCTV and flight information displays, are given priority over other applications, such as email.

The combination of managing bandwidth and application-specific networking also enhances business continuity and limits damage from security breaches.

‘We have split up the check-in desk infrastructure at the terminal, so we are using two virtual local area networks (VLans) there,’ said NIA IT manager Darren Kelly.

‘Each check-in desk uses an alternative VLan which means that if we lose any section of the network we would only have alternate check-in desks out of service.’
