University improves network functionality

Roehampton University is installing a fibre network

Roehampton University is installing a fibre network to link four campuses and extend its storage area network (San).

The university has signed a five-year contract with FibreSpan to provide a private multi-core dark fibre network for secure, high-speed dedicated telecommunication links across its geographically-distributed IT infrastructure.

The network, which is due to be deployed in July, will appear as a single transparent network, enabling users to communicate and share applications seamlessly regardless of location.

It will offer a flexible, reliable and cost-effective way to deliver secure communications between the university’s sites and there is scope for future expansion and additional resilience as required.

Fibre optic networks can be costly, but FibreSpan says its local area networks are popular with universities because of its fixed price unlimited bandwidth model making it ideal for educational establishments.
