TheTrainline to buy smartcard firm
Acquisition will speed development of smartcard systems
TheTrainline wants to acquire a smartcard software firm
TheTrainline, which sells rail tickets on behalf of train operators, has made a cash offer to purchase a firm that provides software for smartcard systems.
The acquisition of Advanced Smartcard Technologies will allow TheTrainline to develop its own smartcard systems for rail passengers.
‘One of the ways that TheTrainline provides benefits to rail industry stakeholders is in developing and implementing new methods of rail retailing and information services, designed to reduce costs and enhance customer service,’ said TheTrainline’s chief executive Alan Tomlin.
‘The ability to be able to purchase a rail ticket or have a rail ticket fulfilled to a smartcard or smart-enabled mobile device in a secure manner is one such important development.’
Tomlin says the acquisition of Advanced Smartcard Technologies will allow the company to meet its objectives in that area in the shortest time.
