Thin clients go mobile

VXL Instruments is shipping a low-cost thin-client laptop that could boost security for telework.

The main market for the Itona TL, priced at £385 + VAT, will be in the education sector, said VXL vice-president of sales Frank Noon. “Schools want mobile racks with laptops that they can wheel from class to class,” he added.

However, thin-client laptops could also provide firms with a secure system for telework. Staff with a broadband internet connection could access corporate applications equally well from home or the office, removing the need for them to use their own PC, Noon said.

In the healthcare sector, a portable thin client could also offer a more secure alternative to a Tablet PC because no patient data would be stored on the device.

The Itona TL has a 15in display, a 1GHz Transmeta processor and up to 2GB of memory. Battery life is around three hours, said the firm.
