Stratus launches quad core server

The ftServer 6200 is likely to support virtualisation and database appplications in a wide variety of enterprise environments

Fault tolerant server specialist Stratus has announced a new two-way system based on Intel quad core Xeon chips.

The ftServer 6200, developed jointly with NEC, is designed to provide two independent compute nodes in a single server designed to fit a 4U chassis.

It provides instant failover and redundancy for mission critical applications in order to minimise downtime in enterprise and telco networks, according to Stratus availability consultant Andy Bailey.

“Everything is duplicated, so if one component fails you can continue in simplex mode. The chances of the second node going down are very low,” Bailey said.

As well as the latest Xeon processors, the ftServer 6200 will use PCI-Express 2.0 I/O components, 15,000rpm SAS and SATA hard drives, and 800MHz fully buffered memory.

The use of the latest components is likely to attract a price premium when the systems ships in June, said Bailey, who expects the ftServer 6200 to support virtualisation and database applications in a wide variety of enterprise environments.
