CIOs admit to poor planning causing project failure

CIO Connect survey reveals 42 per cent of CIOs doubt their vision will be achieved

Chief information officers (CIO) have argued that poor planning is largely responsible for IT project failure, according to new research carried out by independent networking organisation CIO Connect.

28 CIOs were surveyed from the UK’s top 250 FTSE companies and 42 per cent were doubtful their vision would be achieved. The main vision held by CIOs at the moment is aligning IT to business context, according to Alistair Russell, Development Director at CIO Connect.

Only 52 per cent of CIOs rated their existing plans as good while 14 per cent said their plans were inadequate.

The research also found most CIOs were more interested in developing their team’s skills than their own. 79 per cent said the key to a successful department was building a team with excellent leadership capabilities while none of the CIOs questions believed they were a priority for development.

However, when they did consider their own development needs, 46 per cent said influencing boardroom colleagues and building commitment to information services across the organisation was the biggest priority for personal development.
