Medical centre installs IP system

Latham House Medical Surgery, the UK's largest single-site medical practice, has deployed IP communications technology from Alcatel to improve call-handling and staff productivity.

The project will allow the practice, which has 92 staff, including 20 doctors, to more effectively meet the demands of the NHS Connecting For Health initiative, designed to provide better and more timely health information for patients.

The Lancet sets up web archive

The Lancet has made 200 years’ worth of medical knowledge accessible online. Medical professionals, academics and students can now view more than a million documents at thelancet.com. Specialist provider Global Beach helped the journal to redesign the site for quick and easy access to content. The Lancet says this has led to increased revenues and a rise in the number of people registering for the site every month.

RoadChef picks Torex EPoS tools

Motorway service station operator RoadChef has rolled out Torex Retail’s electronic point-of-sale (EPoS) system Iridium and its companion back-office software Prism across six key motorway sites to allow it to integrate pricing, stock control and promotions. The move is part of a drive to integrate key processes, and RoadChef says the tools will help reduce queues and improve customer services.

Call routing sector set for growth

The market for global contact centre technology routing will be worth $4.7bn (£2.5bn) by 2009, with most growth coming from developing markets such as India, China, Brazil and South Africa, predicts Datamonitor. The analyst’s report says virtual or distributed contact centres are finally becoming a reality, thanks to internet telephony technology that makes it possible to place phone calls across an IP network.

Ofcom caps BT rental charges

Telecom regulator Ofcom has set a price cap of £81.85 on what BT can charge its rivals for rental of phone lines, a process known as local loop unbundling. The telecoms company had already cut its price for the service from £105.09 to £80 last month.
