Asigra upgrades its net service for multi-OS protection

Alternative tape-based backup can be relatively expensive for remote offices

Online backup specialist Asigra has upgraded its Televaulting system to support multi-platform protection for Unix, Linux, Windows and Mac systems, and to support Oracle 10g and PostgreSQL 8.0 database servers.

Version 6.0 also provides centralised and automated mass-deployment tools to roll out its client software. Asigra’s online backup tools store data in its own datacentres and may appeal to firms that want regular off-site backups of data, particularly where the data must be sent from many remote offices.

Asigra said alternative tape-based backup is relatively expensive for remote offices once licence costs and software maintenance are taken into account.

One of the new features in this release is a web-based tool to monitor and manage remote-site backups. This tool can also be used to deploy the Televaulting client software to remote systems without interrupting users of those systems.

In addition to the new support for Oracle databases, Televaulting also supports agentless backups of servers running IBM DB2.

A block-level resume feature means that interrupted backups of Oracle databases can be resumed mid-way through a file, rather than at the start of the file, which leads to quicker completion of these jobs.

Other enhancements to Televaulting include higher synchronisation speeds for systems running Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. A bare-metal restore facility is also available for these operating systems to enable IT staff to quickly restore the operating system and data from a failed computer to a replacement.
