Video sharing site boosts content delivery
Metacafe sees 500 per cent rise in traffic
Online video sharing site Metacafe has selected a new content delivery network to cope with a surge in internet traffic of more than 500 per cent last year.
Metacafe is the third largest video broadcasting site in the world, based on traffic and page views, and allows people to post videos direct to the site.
Metacafe chief executive Arik Czerniak says popular videos can register more than 20,000 views within hours.
‘Our explosive growth makes it essential that we have a content delivery network optimised for delivery of massive amounts of rich digital media,’ he said.
‘We chose Limelight Networks’ content delivery service for its high-capacity, robust network infrastructure that can respond to spikes in activity while maintaining a very high level of quality and reliability.’
Metacafe is also using VideoRank technology, which employs proprietary algorithms to dynamically determine video ratings and site placement. Users review videos as soon as they are posted, rank them and discard those are not interesting.
Metacafe had more than 16 million visitors and served nearly 450 million videos in November last year alone.
