Backup Exec upgraded

11d adds CDP protection for MS Exchange and SQL server.

Symantec last week launched an upgraded version of its Backup Exec tool, adding continuous data protection (CDP) for Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server.

Symantec inherited the popular Backup Exec disk and tape backup product through its acquisition of Veritas.

“Exec 11d means no more data backup windows will be required,” said Symantec’s European product marketing director Mathew Lodge.

Lodge added that the restore granularity feature has been improved to the point that individual messages or folders can now be restored if users accidentally delete them. Backup Exec can also encrypt data using 128bit and 256bit Advanced Encryption Standard when backing up over the network to tape or disk.

CDP is also available for Microsoft’s SharePoint package with Backup Exec. Other supported products include IBM’s DB2 database and Oracle Database 9i and 10g Recovery Manager and Real Application Clusters.

Meanwhile, the thriving industry for third-party active directory (AD) software may take a hit after Symantec said that its new AD agent offers fast restore on any object, such as users’ properties, without reboot. The security vendor has also enhanced remote backup options, which could help firms optimise low-bandwidth network links, including wide area connectivity.

Along with Backup Exec, Symantec also released Mobile AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows Mobile, AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.2 and Enterprise Edition, and Ghost Solution Suite 2.0.
