Public sector IT takes risks
Think tank recommends less ambition to improve government technology programme success rate
The public sector approach to technology projects is over-ambitious and takes too many risks, according to think tank The Work Foundation.
Lack of clarity about desired policy outcomes and the creeping expansion of the scope of a project contribute to the problems faced by government IT, says the Where Next for Transformational Government? report published this week.
A tendency to use untried technology adds to the risk, says the report. ‘There is too much emphasis on innovating rather than adopting tried and tested technologies,’ it says.
The report includes 10 recommendations for improving the success of public sector IT.
