Scottish Life halves operating costs with system upgrade

UK pensions provider undergoes complete IT refresh

Pension provider has halved IT running costs

UK pensions provider Scottish Life, part of the Royal London Group, has halved its IT operating costs by completely refreshing its IT infrastructure.

The firm has migrated its core legacy applications from a proprietary Unisys Clearpath mainframe to a more open hardware and software environment and modernised its infrastructure to improve application speed and customer service.

The financial services company has undertaken the work to maintain service levels for customers and staff as the business continues to grow.

Scottish Life’s previous mainframe environment was struggling to handle increasing numbers of life and pension business transactions.

‘The total cost of running the systems over the next five years is less than half that of the Unisys mainframe solution proposed at the time,’ said Ian Chapple, chief information officer, Royal London Group.

‘It has been a very successful project and has provided a huge return on investment,’ he said.

The 18 month project was undertaken using application modernisation software provided by Micro Focus in partnership with migration specialist MSS International.
