Databases witness revenue growth

Linux and open source see fastest expansion due to industry support, Gartner says

Relational database management systems (RDBMS) software revenue grew to $13.8bn in 2005, according to research firm Gartner.

The growth represents an 8.3 per cent increase on 2004 revenues.

Open source database systems showed the biggest levels of growth, despite having one of the smallest revenue, says Gartner analyst Colleen Graham.

'These open source DBMS products continue to improve in terms of functionality and scalability, and DBMS tool vendors are beginning to provide support for these offerings,' she said.

Linux was the best performing RDBMS platform thanks mainly to being driven hard by Oracle, who have worked hard to get user acceptance of Linux as a database platform.

Microsoft got the highest levels of proprietary growth however, with pent-up demand for SQL Server 2005 driving sales.
