Tate Modern launches virtual tour

London art gallery Tate Modern has launched an interactive application to allow internet users to have a virtual tour of exhibitions.

The Tate Modern web site, which has been upgraded by BT, allows people to view historical timelines of art collections and research information about particular artistic movements.

The gallery has also launched 'Explore' a virtual internet tour, which allows people to view all the art exhibitions held on the seven floors of the Tate Modern.

'Explore Tate Modern extends the redisplay of the artworks to audiences all around the world, offering visitors online and onsite enhanced opportunities to interact with the new collection displays,' said Jemima Rellie, head of digital programmes at Tate.

The web site also provides interpretation material, including timelines, written captions and audio clips.

'It has never been easier for visitors to locate a work or movement of interest or indeed to re-visit the space that captured their imagination.'

IT and networking firm BT has also provided creative design services and technical support to the Tate, as part of the contract.
