Queen's birthday honours list sees one gong awarded

The Queen's Birthday Honours list released on Friday [11/06] saw just two technology gongs awarded.

An MBE, to ICT Director of Imperial College London, Arthur Spirling, and an OBE to John Carr, Secretary of the UK Children's Charities' Coalition on Internet Safety and long-time campaigner for improved child safety on the internet.

Stirling was awarded "for services to Higher Education," and lives in Carshalton, Surrey.

Carr was awarded for his contribution to internet safety, being a key figure in promoting the establishment of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP), the UK police’s main operational national agency for dealing with online child protection.

He said of the award: "I am deeply moved and honoured to have my work recognised in this way. I am also very keen for this award to be seen as an acknowledgement of everything Britain’s children’s charities have been doing to help make the internet an even better place than it already is.”
