Channel 4 improves online video service

Content will be faster and more secure

Television firm Channel 4 has installed peer-to-peer technology to power its new internet video on-demand service, 4oD.

The solution, from VeriSign, enables the secure delivery of content and reduces the time it takes to download video content and produces high quality with a superior user experience.

Andy Taylor, managing director for new media at Channel 4 said: 'We are very excited about 4oD, our new Video on Demand (VoD) service, which allows Channel 4 to make all its home-grown programming available on an on-demand basis.'

'By providing the critical infrastructure to make 4oD possible, VeriSign powers the network to offer our distinctive, high-quality programming to a broadband audience. Since the platform launched, the technology is delivering on this promise.'

The new infrastructure allows Channel 4 to offer viewers secure, reliable and on-demand access to their library of video and music content. The solution also enables Channel 4 to legitimately distribute their copyrighted content with full digital rights management, at a lower cost and higher quality.

Channel 4, is one of the first major broadcasters to make all its commissioned content available on-demand. Its recently launched 4oD service enables users to catch up on popular network programs such as 'Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares' and 'Deal or No Deal' online for up to 30 days after their first televised transmission.
