Royal Mail cuts maintenance costs by 50 per cent

Royal Mail's planned maintenance budget for lifts is halved

Royal Mail has reduced planned maintenance costs by 50 per cent during a pilot software programme to introduce risk-based technology.

The intelligent software reduced the operational costs and reactive workload of managing over 500 lifts by half during the six month pilot programme.

The new technology also reduced breakdowns in the system by 50 per cent.

The intelligent software has been developed by a joint venture between Lloyd's Register Capstone, a member of the Lloyd's Register Group, and WSP Group .

The system provides asset managers and engineers with the knowledge to make correct and timely decisions about the assets they control.

It helps reduce costs, improve availability of critical assets, implement optimal maintenance plans and provide full compliance with all regulatory requirements.

The success of the pilot project has led to the implementation of the technology and principles to a number of other assets within the Royal Mail's property estate.

‘It is not often that you come across truly innovative ideas such as this in the field of asset management,’ said Keith Elliott, head of facilities management at Royal Mail.

‘The system has proven itself as a cost-effective means of managing risk across large-scale asset bases,’ said Elliott.
