Scottish university tests wireless system

University of Abertay examines de-centralised mobile computing network

The University of Abertay in Dundee is trialling new technology for use in wireless networks.

In partnership with a private developer, the university is testing node-based wireless content delivery where information is stored throughout the network, rather than on a single central hub.

Because information is stored at the edge of the wireless network, it reduces the need for unnecessary traffic by allowing the system to do its own processing, making the whole thing work quicker.

Lachlan MacKinnon, a professor of information and knowledge engineering at the University of Abertay says give local residents access to online information which is relevant and interesting to them.

'For Abertay, being involved with this leading-edge wireless technology has obvious synergies with our development of new degree courses and research interests in smart systems,' he said.

Students from the University of Abertay's computing and creative technologies school will be heavily involved in the wireless project, designing user interfaces and games that can be played across the new network.
