Salaries for permanent IT staff in Britain rose by 2 per cent over the last 12 month, according to a report from IT specialist headhunter CV Screen.

E-commerce development skills are in greatest demand as companies look to boost their web revenues, the report says. The average UK salary for an IT professional now stands at £36,818.

The report benchmarked 50 various IT roles and monitored over 7,000 advertised positions in the UK during the first quarter of 2010.

“We noticed that in Q4 last year that there was a large increase in vacancies, largely caused by pent up demand from employers who had been sitting tight during the economic slowdown,” said CV Screen spokesperson Matthew Iveson. “At the beginning of 2009 it was clear that candidates were understandably reluctant to change roles due to the economic climate. Only now are we seeing greater mobility in the market as IT professionals have the confidence to seek new roles which offer career prospects and in many cases a higher salary.”

The report shows that skills most in demand include e-commerce web development and specifically PHP expertise, Java, .NET and search engine optimisation.
