Spitfire engineering research computer takes off at Southampton
University of Southampton opens high performance system to help engineers
The University of Southampton has launched its Spitfire computer cluster, a system designed to carry out research on engineering problems.
Spitfire will be used to simulate the flow of air across different wing structures, model flows inside engines, and see how different shapes of yacht hull behave in water.
It will also be used to test novel ideas for data handling and workflow.
Professor Bill Wakeham, vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton says Spitfire will be an important tool for the university.
'These new high performance computing tools will prove invaluable for academics here at Southampton who are engaged in innovative research projects, including many with key industrial partners,' he said.
The software for the running of the system is being provided by Microsoft, who have worked with the university on high performance systems in the past.
