Cardiff University begins IT change programme

Welsh higher institution to start building online buisiness processes

Cardiff University is putting much of its processes online to improve efficiency.

Students and university staff will use the system to access a range of resources including collaborative workspaces, timetables, reading lists and business processes such as applying for optional courses.

The initiative to develop the system is being undertaken as a partnership between the university's Information Services Directorate and IBM, which is providing service oriented architecture technology to help it run smoothly.

The Modern Working Environment will underpin a transition in the way Cardiff works, says Dr David Grant, the university's vice chancellor.

'This system has an important role to play in delivering our vision for the university,' he said.

'It marks a major contribution to our world-class research, learning and teaching, and will further enhance the student experience at Cardiff.'

The project to create the Modern Working Environment is the most ambitious IT-enabled change programme undertaken so far by the University, says Martyn Harrow, Cardiff's director of information services.

'We look forward to working with IBM and the wider university community to deliver this key initiative,' he said.
