Nato awards £40m communications contract

System will allow Nato Response Force to deploy communications HQ in the field

The NATO response force will have improved communications

Nato has awarded a £40m contract for the supply of a new communications system for the Nato Response Force to supplier EADS Defence & Security.

The system will allow forces to deploy small - up to 20 users - or large - up to 150 users - communications headquarters in the field with both voice and data connections to other Nato forces.

EADS said it will provide a seamless transition with existing services.

The system will provide improved secure voice and data communications using WiMax wireless technology, and can be rapidly deployed to meet the needs of the mobile response force.

The project will be managed and delivered from Newport, South Wales, alongside partners Booz Allen Hamilton, HP and Cisco.

The contract has an optional Customer Logistic Support contract valued at £14m.
