Mobile operators set out security framework

Building secure devices for more complex transactions

The mobile operator-led organisation Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) has set out ambitious plans to provide a baseline for hardware security in mobile devices for the next five to 10 years.

The proposals are set out in a document entitled “Advanced Trusted Environment”. The report suggests a specification that details a baseline set of hardware security requirements enabling firms to run new services with confidence.

UK Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has welcomed the release saying she was pleased that the mobile industry continued its commitment to drive mobile phone security. “A key part of the OMTP requirements is increasing hardware security so that hackers cannot profit from stolen phones by changing their unique identity,” she said.

OMTP said its recommendations could provide the solid foundations for new mobile payment solutions and services, such as par-per-view TV.

A recent Juniper Research report, “Mobile Financial Services: Banking & payment markets 2007-2011”, estimates the value of global mobile transactions will top £295bn by 2011.
