Sun delivers StarOffice 8
Release aims for closer Microsoft experience
Sun has released StarOffice 8, taking the battle to Microsoft Office through closer links to the dominant desktop suite and support for a new document standard that makes exchanging files simpler.
StarOffice 8 software supports the OpenDocument Format for Office Applications - an Oasis standard that is garnering support among European agencies. Supporters say that OpenDocument gives firms a way to avoid being locked in to proprietary file formats.
The latest release also aims for closer compatibility with Microsoft through improved import and export of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, including password-protected files and slides with animations and transitions.
Additionally, macros can be exported from Microsoft Office to StarOffice.
Sun will also continue its policy of undercutting Microsoft on price. StarOffice 8 costs £22 per user or £15.50 for upgrades.
