£100 thin client launched
New diskless thin client costs forty percent less than the competition
VXL instruments has launched a new sub-£100 thin client, the Itona TC23xx series.
The Itona series is a diskless, fanless desktop, which VXL said costs 40 per cent less than comparable thin client systems – although the £99 price tag does not include VAT.
The Itona TC23xx range has a 1GHz Via C7 processor, can be pre-loaded with Linux or Windows CE, and supports Citrix, Linux, Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, and Windows 2003 Server client server systems.
A thin client for under £100 challenges the PC’s dominance as the corporate desktop of choice, said VXL’s sales vice president Frank Noon. "In the majority of cases, the company PC is a waste of money and a security risk. Thin client technology pares the hardware on each desk right down whilst still giving users the software, data and performance they need," he added.
VXL also has a laptop version, which also gives users the option of using 3G connections through a PC Card slot, but since it has USB ports, it could run Vodafone’s newest HSUPA device, which has a ‘USB stick’ form factor.
The TC23 has a 10/100Mbit/s network interface card, no disk, and is locked down so users can not load software onto it. No data is stored on the device.
