VMware buys Rabbit

Virtualisation leader buys UK open source messaging company

VMware aims Rabbit application messaging at best-of-breed cloud applications

VMware's Java application-focused division SpringSource announced the acquisition of UK open source cloud messaging outfit Rabbit Technologies today.

The virtualisation leader said Rabbit's lightweight, scalable application messaging technology RabbitMQ is well suited to communication between cloud-based applications.

SpringSource general manager Rod Johnson pointed out that cloud applications require a fundamentally different messaging infrastructure to those used in standard enterprise applications.

“By adding RabbitMQ to our suite, SpringSource can extend its emerging application platform with technology critical to modern virtual and cloud deployment models,” added Johnson.

Rabbit's chief executive Alexis Richardson said, "By providing a multi-protocol, completely open, portable messaging system, our technology can be a key enabler of tomorrow’s applications."

VMware said RabbitMQ will continue to be open source, and SpringSource plans to continue full support for the RabbitMQ developer community.
