As many as 70% of major security incidents start with an endpoint.

Securing endpoints like laptops and smartphones is "absolutely critical" when it comes to protecting the company as a whole, says BT's Alexandra Foster.

Speaking to Computing's Tom Allen about endpoint management, Foster quoted an IDC study that found that 70% of major incidents start with an endpoint, making protecting those systems so important - especially in the remote working era.

"The landscape of endpoints is now vast. You cannot do without [endpoint management]; it is a pure necessity. People need to invest. About 20% of IT budgets go towards cybersecurity, and...there is a question about whether 20% is enough.

"So the question is, 'How can you increase your budget?' but also, 'How can you use your technology efficiently to be able to create a safe environment?' Once you're infected, if you don't remediate and solve it in seconds, what happens to your data? What happens to your plan?

"I don't need to talk about the attacks we've seen over the last few years: they were all headlines, they were all brand impact. If you don't protect your endpoints, it's absolutely at your peril."

This is part of a series of videos with Alexandra around endpoint management. Watch Computing for the rest, coming soon.
