Network managers can now literally hold connectivity in the palm of their hands. STMicroelectronics and BeWan Systems have developed the first component in the world to integrate USB and ISDN technologies in a single chip. Working from a joint specification, STMicroelectronics handled the component design while BeWan Systems handled ISDN signal and Windows drivers development. The ST5481 comprises a USB interface, a USB controller, a voltage regular and an S interface in the same integrated circuit. BeWan has used it to create the smallest ISDN USB adaptor on the market. This device, intended for portable and desktop computers, operates under Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Enabling 64 or 128Kbps internet access, it also makes use of BeWan Virtual Modem Software technology which allows analogue functions via ISDN: fax up to 14.4Kbps, voice answering machine and telephony. The ST5481 will be marketed through OEM partnerships with telecom service providers and IT companies.
