Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, aka Patrick Stewart, was beamed down to San Francisco for the launch of Windows 2000 last week. The event saw Microsoft claiming to boldly go where it has never gone before by trying to test the ability of Unix to 'Klingon' to the high-end enterprise space. Bill Gates said Windows 2000 was a key platform for e-commerce, especially in the business-to-business arena. He also attempted some comedy with Stewart but despite numerous puns about "next generation" software, Gates avoided making any jokes about the Captain's struggle against the Borg: a horde of technologically advanced power-hungry drones bent on taking over the universe.
