Greater Manchester Fire Brigade has poured cold water on upgrading its desktop PCs and instead splashed out on a thin-client network. Mike Harris, deputy computer manager, at the Fire Brigade, said the thin client technology allows the Brigade to use existing hardware while enforcing a controlled desktop operating environment. A Compaq Proliant 1600-based server farm running Citrix MetaFrame supports around 30 486 and Pentium-based clients at the Brigade's Swinton headquarters. Thin client technology allows users to access bespoke applications and the Microsoft Office suite through standard desktops. The thin client network may be extended to the Brigade's ISDN-based Wan in the future.
