Written by Phil Muncaster

The demand for domain names surged ever higher this year, according to the latest figures from .com registry VeriSign.

The firm's Domain Name Industry Brief for the second quarter of 2008 showed that domain name registrations now stand at 168 million, four per cent up on the first quarter and 22 per cent up on the same quarter last year.

The most popular top level domain remained .com, followed by .de, .cn, .net and .uk.

Latin American countries showed particularly strong growth, with .com and .net registrations increasing by nearly a third, according to the report.
