Thai diplomat has trouble on the blog

Brit political head in Bangkok suffers sex slurs

Written by Matt Chapman

British diplomat Ian Proud has been embarrassed after accepting a commission to write a blog for a Thai newspaper.

Proud, who is head of the political section at the British embassy in Bangkok, is leaving the country soon and was asked to write about his thoughts and experiences in Thailand.

However, after his picture appeared on the blog at The Nation website a number of posters claimed to recognise him from trips to Bangkok's seedier districts.

"I saw him walking arm-in-arm with a girl that could only be described as 'two-dollar whore'. I bet that girl got a visa no problem," said one comment.

"I recall going to the embassy once and that same night was down on Cowboy and who did I bump into? Yes, it was Ian," wrote another, talking about one of Bangkok's infamous red light districts.

The 38-year-old diplomat said he had only written 'cute little stories' about Thailand as he couldn’t write about his job.

"It's a real eye-opener seeing the depths of people's feelings about a common diplomat," he said.
