Porn studio sticks up for Blu-ray

Adult movie maker hoping to benefit from an installed base of PlayStation users

Written by Iain Thomson

The Blu-ray camp has picked up its first major pornography studio in a deal to carry its adult content in the future.

Digital Playground has announced that it will be moving its films to the Blu-ray standard as soon as a supplier becomes available.

In an interview with Adult Video News the company co-founder, known only as 'Joone', said that Digital Playground is hoping to benefit from an installed base of PlayStation users.

"The big thing is that the PlayStation 3 will be out in March or April, and it's going to support Blu-ray," he said.

"Standalone players will be out shortly after that. That's a lot earlier than was projected before, and it shoots a big hole in the six- to eight-month lead on the market HD-DVD was hoping to have."

Digital Playground has already started shooting its films in high definition ready for the new format and is downgrading image quality to get films to fit on a DVD disc.

Digital Playground claims to control 40 per cent of the US adult DVD market and is reported to have sales of $12.6bn in 2005. It shot the industry's first high definition adult film in 2004.
