Enterprise market edges towards mobility

But slow pace of adoption in Europe is cause for concern, reports IDC

Written by Robert Jaques

The European enterprise market is moving towards mobility, but at a slower pace than anticipated, according to research.

Analyst IDC said that more education from the industry is needed to change the mindset of management and IT departments in European organisations.

The report stated that less than two in five European organisations have a mobile data strategy, only a slight increase compared to a couple of years ago, but indicating that organisations are starting to look at bringing more mobility to employees.

But the research also claims that enterprises so far show little interest in mobile data applications for business use.

Only four per cent of the organisations surveyed are interested in committing to mobile data applications such as push-to-talk, mobile group calling, and more business-specific applications such as mobile sales force automation.

Rosie Secchi, a senior analyst at IDC's European wireless enterprise service, suggested that interest shown towards mobility varies depending on the size of the company.

"Smaller companies still have the lowest percentages with regards to mobile data strategies and mobile applications in general," she said in a statement.

"Mobile operators and other industry players such as equipment vendors, systems integrators and solution providers still need to work hard to bring this section of the market closer to understanding the real value and benefits that mobile solutions can provide to organisations."
