Linksys brings VoIP to European home users

Wireless firm teams with telcos to offer phone adaptor preconfigured for consumers

Written by Tom Sanders in San Francisco

Linksys is working with telecoms operators to offer its Voice over IP (VoIP) adaptors to home users in Europe.

The firm's vice president for engineering and logistics, Malachy Moynihan, told vnunet.com: "We are already sampling with all of the major customers in Europe."

The partnerships will see the networking company supply a preconfigured version of its Linksys Phone Adapter to the telcos.

The device allows consumers to use VoIP services with up to two regular telephone sets out of the box. The service requires a broadband internet connection and subscription to a VoIP provider.

Linksys has also launched a range of wireless local area network products using both 'g' and 'a' Wi-Fi standards.

Although 802.11a is currently mostly used in the enterprise market, the company said it expects a demand for the additional bandwidth the technology provides as applications including audio and video streaming gain popularity.

It has also unveiled its first video camera using 802.11g wireless technology. Moynihan said the product will initially be mainly used for security and surveillance.
