Sun lands bank deal for Java Desktop System

Allied Irish Bank to deploy JDS on 7,500 desktops

Written by Peter Williams at JavaOne in San Francisco

Sun Microsystems' Java Desktop System (JDS) is to be deployed on 7,500 desktops throughout Allied Irish Bank's (AIB) branches.

The network will run the Linux-based JDS software, and the deployment includes the migration of branch applications. The roll-out is planned for next year as part of AIB's New Branch Banking Platform.

According to Sun, it is the largest financial services deal for JDS since it was introduced in December last year.

"The global momentum for the [JDS] continues at a rapid pace because of its affordability, enhanced security and manageability, and interoperability," said Curtis Sasaki, vice president at Sun, in a statement. "We see growing demand in the financial, education and government markets."

Reseller Horizon Open Systems will implement the new systems with Sun's services organisation providing technology consulting, support and education.

JDS release 2 shipped in May. As well as Linux, it is planned for release on Sun Solaris and as a thin client.

Sun's biggest JDS installation will be the 500,000 to one million desktops planned for deployment by the Peoples' Republic of China by the end of this year.
