The government is giving another €31m (£20m) to the European Space Agency's Galileo satellite navigation system project.

Secretary of state for trade and industry, Alistair Darling, says the investment is good for the UK.

'This investment is good news for British jobs, British technology and science,' he said.

Other ESA countries, including France, Italy and Germany are contributing equivalent amounts to the project, which is also receiving €200m (£134m) funding from the EU.

The project is currently in the testing phase, with the first satellite in the network, Giove-a, launched late last year.
