Microsoft has bought online mapping firm Multimap for an undisclosed sum, giving the company access to a range of new location tools.
The deal will allow the software giant to step up its rivalry with Google, whose Maps service launched in 2005. Microsoft says that the acquisition will complement existing applications such as Virtual Earth and Live Search.
"The addition of Multimap enhances Microsoft’s position as a leading provider of mapping and location platform services," said Microsoft Online Services Group general manager Sharon Baylay.
"The acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business beyond the UK and globally."
