Symantec is believed to be in advanced talks to acquire storage firm Veritas Software.
A deal could be announced as early as this week and is expected to be worth about $13bn, according to reports in The Financial Times and Wall Street Journal.
If the security firm is successful in a bid, Symantec would increase its presence amongst large enterprises and public sector organisations. Currently much of its anti-virus customer base consists of home users and small businesses.
Symantec chief executive John Thompson has made a number of acquisitions in the past few years to broaden the company?s focus.
In February this year it acquired software distribution and patch management firm On Technology.
