Managing risk is a key task for IT managers

Computing is hosting an exclusive morning seminar and networking event to be held on Wednesday 18 March 2009 at Kensington Roof Garden, Derry Street, London.

The purpose of this seminar is to gather together industry leaders to contribute their views on managing risk and to hear from an expert panel of speakers, including former MI5 and US government undercover agent Gary Murray.

Seminar places are free of charge but due to the popularity of such events they will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To book your place at this exclusive seminar and networking event please email lucy.tarbard@incisivemedia.com

About the seminar

The threats to every organisation are ever increasing – from financial crises to organised crime and terrorism to information security and more. Technology is often identified as both a problem and a solution. In reality, IT may have increased the risks that enterprises face, but IT alone is not enough solve them. The challenge faced by companies and public sector bodies comes also from putting the right risk management processes in place and educating employees in their responsibilities. Achieving the right balance between people, process and technology is at the heart of managing risk.

In this exclusive half-day seminar, organised by Computing in association with BT, we examine every aspect of successful risk planning, and hear from the industry’s leading experts on the strategies, tools and best practices needed. Delegates will be able to share their experiences with the top security and risk managers that have been there and done it. In these troubled economic times, dealing with the risks that your organisation faces could make the difference between survival or disaster.

Our expert panel includes:

  • Bryan Glick, Editor, Computing
  • Gary Murray, Former MI5 and US government undercover agent
  • John Walker, MD of Secure Bastion and Director of the Information Systems Security Association (International Board)
  • Ray Stanton, Head of Global Security and Business Continuity, BT
  • Marcus Alldrick, chief information security officer, Lloyds of London

Agenda

08.30 - Registration & Welcome Coffee

09.00 – Introduction & exclusive research overview - Bryan Glick, editor, Computing
Computing commissioned exclusive research into the attitudes and strategies for risk management across the private and public sectors, and the results present a unique insight into the way organisations are approaching the people, process and technology aspects of the challenges they face. The survey will be revealed for the first time during this session, and is bound to stimulate debate on the state of risk management across the UK today.

09.30 - The key risk challenges for IT leaders - John Walker, MD of Secure Bastion and Director of the Information Systems Security Association (International Board)

Businesses are under intensifying pressure, as the level and nature of threats to the enterprise escalates. In order to mitigate these risks, IT leaders need to be able to asses risks and deal with incidents in a way that maintains the credibility of evidence which may be later relied on in courts. This presentation will outline the mechanics, process and procedures which must be in place to successfully manage this activity.

10.15 - The people and process of managing risk - Ray Stanton - Head of Global security and business continuity, BT

Meeting the increasingly important challenge of protecting a business from attack demands that technology and people are entwined. Technology must continue to evolve but not at the expense of a well educated and knowledgeable group of employees.

11.00 - Coffee Break

11.30 – Marcus Alldrick, Lloyds of London

12.15 – Gary Murray
