Cash machine operator Link plans to deploy the UK's first cashpoint service for mobile phones.

The MobileATM will emulate cashpoint processes, turning an existing business model into a mobile commerce offering.

Built to work with current mobile handset technology and networks, the service aims to give customers secure access to their bank accounts using existing PINs.

The service will initially allow consumers to check their balance via an application downloaded to the handset. But the company also plans to offer a top-up facility for crediting any prepay mobile account with funds from the subscriber's bank account, with a promise of same-day transaction settlement.

Systems integrator Morse Group is providing technical consultancy and expertise for the Java-based infrastructure, supplied by Sun Microsystems.

Link expects to launch MobileATM later this year.
