Clarks takes a step forward

Software changes will take less time with a new upgraded system

Shoe retailer Clarks is upgrading its in-store IT infrastructure to allow systems to be tailored to the needs of individual shops.

The firm is replacing electronic point-of-sale software that handles back and front-office functions, such as card payments, sales information, reports and stock management.

Clarks retail IT services manager Alistair Smith says the biggest benefit is that the upgraded software can be configured according to the store size.

‘We have a variety of shops from small stores to large factory outlets, and this software allows us to install fewer functions at smaller stores and complex ones at larger outlets,’ he said.

Clarks has upgraded its Connected Retailer Store software from BT Expedite, which is installed and managed by Getronics, and has resolved instability issues that could have resulted in shop systems being restarted.

‘We can also add new functions as our business requirements change, without having to alter code,’ said Smith. ‘It could allow us to introduce handheld terminals once the business case is made as the platform will already be in place.’

Smith says the new system will allow the retailer to make software changes quickly, saving time and money, and improve the processing of card payments.

‘Chip-and-PIN is now integrated into the software rather than added-on and this will mean customers waiting less time for their receipt,’ he said.

Smith says BT Expedite gave a clear migration plan to move its 670 shops to the new technology, which can be installed, managed and maintained without the need for on-site visits.

Butler Group analyst Mark Blowers says the retail industry is dynamic and system refreshes are vital to keep with changes.

‘Integrating requirements such as this into the new software makes it easier and more efficient to use and less likely to fail than add-on systems,’ he said.

Blowers says the ability to provide a platform according to shop needs will enable Clarks to offer basic functions to small outlets, saving time and money on training staff.
