CorelDraw X4 gets Vista support and online collaboration, but seems less compelling than the earlier X3 version

CorelDraw Graphics Suite X4 is the latest update to Corel’s groundbreaking graphics package, adding over 50 new features. However, in our opinion this version seems less compelling than its predecessor.

CorelDraw X4 adds support for Windows Vista and several new features such as independent page layers and previews of text formatting options.

We installed X4 on a variety of desktop and laptops, running both Windows XP SP3 and Vista. Corel said X4 integrates with Vista’s desktop search capabilities, supporting keyword searches via the Open or Import dialog boxes.

On install, X4 checks if it needs to combine any updates into the final installable image before proceeding, but none had been released at the time of testing. The install delivers the latest versions of CorelDraw, PhotoPaint, a screen capture package called Corel Capture, and a third-party package called Bitstream Font Navigator that allows users to obtain new fonts online.

Improved text handling allows users to preview any text formatting before applying changes. X4 also integrates with the MyFonts.com’s font identification service. Any bitmapped font used in graphics designs can be identified using this.

PhotoPaint now has RAW camera file support, allowing file import directly from most digital camera types. PhotoPaint can also now straighten images scanned or photographed at an angle, and also has a better tone adjustment facility.

Another third-party feature integrated into X4 is ConceptShare, which allows online collaboration. Users have to sign up for the service, which is hosted by www.conceptshare.com, and can then post designs to “workspaces” that can be accessed by clients or partners in real-time.

X4 adds support for all versions of Microsoft Office Publisher, and is also compatible with Office Word 2007 and Adobe Content Suite 3, as well as Acrobat 8 and AutoCAD DXF and DWG file formats.
