Yahoo adds McAfee's secure browsing tools

Yahoo is to add content warning tools to its search results pages

Written by David Neal

Yahoo has added improved security features to its search results pages, thanks to a new mutually beneficial deal with security firm McAfee.

Today, the firms announced the deal which initially see Yahoo internet searchers find their results tagged for malicious sites, or indeed anything else considered 'risky', before a reciprocative deal sees McAfee users treated to Yahoo's search tools as part of their ongoing subscriptions. Yahoo has adopted the SiteAdvisor technology recently launched by McAfee.

The tools will warn users about three different types of risks, associated with their browsing. This will include sites that might harbour browser exploits, offer dangerous downloads, or require the use of an email address – something that the firm warned would lead to unsolicited emails.

Siteadvisor is currently already available as an add-on to the Firefox browser, and rival search firm Google launched a similar service in 2006.
