Sun and Fujitsu Sparc partnership yields new servers

New Sparc systems from Sun and Fujitsu have both improved performance and green credentials

Written by David Neal

The Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu Sparc partnership has today yielded two new systems, based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor.

The SPARC Enterprise servers, known as the T5140 and T5240, feature better performance and improved scalability according to the firms, taking up less space than competing servers, and, in some cases offering three times the performance power.

This small size has additional benefits, according to the firms, who said that it would save on datacentre costs, as well as energy consumption. "The eco-friendliness of the SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers is an added benefit to our customers in terms of lowering their environmental costs” said Tatsuo Tomita, corporate senior vice president at Fujitsu Limited in a statement.

Sun and Fujitsu released some benchmark figures to support their claims. For example, they found that the dual socket T5240 server running Solaris OS 10 could handle 65,000 Lotus Notes users with ease, and offers five times the performance of an equivalent HP server running quad core Xeon processors.
