Capita moves staff offshore

Over 300 jobs set to go

Written by Rosalie Marshall

Close to 400 Capita staff have been given formal notice that operations at its site in Wytall, Birmingham will soon close. Positions will be transferred to Glasgow or Mumbai.

Life and protection firm Resolution appointed Capita to take over its business’ customer service and administration, including its IT services departments, in 2007.

However Capita declined to comment on the specific job roles being cut until a 90 day consultation period with staff had taken place.

In an official statement, the firm said, “All staff will be encouraged to apply for other roles within the Capita Group and we are currently working with Unite to mitigate potential redundancies."

Meanwhile, Union Unite’s deputy general secretary, Graham Goddard, said in a statement, "Unite members in the Wythall Capita site face anxiety as their future rests in the balance.”

Goddard also expressed fears that the union’s initial estimate of 1,200 jobs losses following the deal between Capita and Resolution, would now become a reality: "Unite now has major concerns about the future of the Capita operation in Glasgow, which will also be badly hit as the company press ahead with plans to axe many hundreds of jobs as it transfers the bulk of it's Customer Services to Mumbai."
