Sybase mobilises apps

New mobile middleware announced

Written by Martin Veitch

Sybase continued its quest to mobilise data by announcing plans for a new architecture to simplify connectivity at its TechWave annual conference in Las Vegas this week.

The firm's new mobility middleware blueprint is intended to help bridge enterprise data to mobile devices by providing unified services and interfaces to develop applications against, rather than having developers worry about individual devices' battery, security, connectivity and other characteristics. Sybase will also provide a unified application development tool to connect data sources with processes and an administration console.

Stephen Drake, programme director for mobile enterprise at IDC, said, mobile developers must become technical experts in how to access core data across a wide variety of systems. Solving this challenge will help enterprises focus on the benefits of unwiring the enterprise.

Separately, Sybase said it will work with handset manufacturing giant HTC to optimise Windows Mobile devices for its iAnywhere mobility software.

Sybase's Rob Veitch said the HTC partnership will help simplify the ability to hook up users with enterprise data. "Our view is that you need to be able to access data anytime or anywhere whether you have connectivity or not, and applications need to react under any conditions," he said.
