Fresh from completing its acquisition of messaging security specialist CipherTrust last week, internet security vendor Secure Computing today launched a new version of its identity and access management (IAM) appliance aimed specifically at small and medium businesses (SMBs).

The company said the new SafeWord SecureWire 50 appliance would provide SMBs or branch offices with a secure SSL VPN-based hub capable of providing remote access and authentication for up to 50 concurrent users. An add-on module can ensure the appliance can handle up to 100 concurrent users.

The new appliance offers a range of access management functionality, including web-based remote access via SSL VPN, wireless LAN management, internal Network Access Control and embedded endpoint device security capable of ensuring any endpoint device accessing the network is configured and secured in line with internal IT policies.

Secure Computing's SafeWord strong authentication tokens are also included and can be checked by the appliance to establish the identity of users trying to access the network.

Jay Goldlist, vice-president and general manager of Identity, Access and SMB Products for Secure Computing, said in a statement that the wide range of functionality coupled with tight integration with Microsoft Active Directory means that firms can install and manage the appliance relatively easily. "Aimed at the entry point of the market, it offers a great solution with a lower total cost of ownership,” he added.

The company said the product is available immediately for £12,969.
