The UK Data Protection Act 1998 requires organisations to gain the consent of individuals before transmitting certain types of personal information or show a need for the information to be sent.
The Freedom of Information Act came into force this year and requires public-sector organisations to make information more readily available to the general public. Public bodies have 20 working days to respond to requests.
The Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act is a US auditing regulation intended to prevent fraudulent accounting. The deadline for certain UK firms to comply is July 2006. It applies to all UK firms with a stock exchange in the US, and to some UK firms that trade with the US.
