EMC tackles web content

Storage and enterprise content managemetn giant looks at web content

Written by Mark Chillingworth

Information management and storage supplier EMC Documentum has become the latest large-scale vendor to enter the web content management arena with the launch of EMC Documentum Page Builder for organisations that want to develop individual websites.

Balaji Yelamanchili, senior vice president for content management and archiving at EMC Documentum , said: “Page Builder simplifies the process of creating, managing and deploying websites, empowering business users to be more involved and have more control over web content.”

The application has a graphical user interface for designing websites, and builds sites using components of headers, footers and navigation tools. Users can also deploy Dreamweaver templates.

EMC developed the Page Builder application using the Documentum enterprise content management platform as its backbone. As a result, organisations will be able to integrate existing Documentum repository, business process management and workflow into website creation.

“Business users have little or no control over layout, content and functionality of websites, resulting in sites that lack a targeted user experience and fail to meet business goals,” said Yelamanchili.

However, web content management specialist SiteKit ( www.sitekit.net ), claimed that small companies that focused on one area of information management were better able focus on an organisation’s needs as they “have better ideas”.

Chris Eckl, chief technology officer at SiteKit, said he was surprised at the length of time the large vendors had taken to deliver web content management. Si teKit CEO Campbell Grant added: “Small web content management providers typically do not have the marketing clout to capitalise their good ideas on a global scale, and that is where EMC views an opportunity.”
